Google Business Suspension: What not to do

Welcome to the Home Service Marketer newsletter. Did I get you with that one?

These are my own independent thoughts, and I am writing about topics that interest me. I hope you enjoy this journey of learning alongside me.

In today’s newsletter, we are going to cover:

  • Causes of profile suspensions

  • How to avoid a suspension

  • What to do if it happens

What You Need to Know 👇🏻

What not to do: If you attempt to change your business name or the address on the profile, it will trigger a re-verification. There are exceptions to this; if you’re one of them, consider yourself lucky.

Why it happens: Google must ensure it shows real businesses to its users. After a significant change, they must confirm the new location for local search results and prevent fraudulent activity or alterations that could mislead Google’s users.

How to prepare for it: If you need to make one of these changes you want to do the following

  1. Name change

    1. Ensure you have legal business documentation of the new name to provide during the re-verification.

  2. Address change:

    1. Build 50 citations at the new address prior to making the change. This can help it change without triggering a verification.

    2. Ensure you have proper signage on the storefront to submit in the case of a re-verification.

It’s a pain in the ass, but worth it.

Trust me, I hate dealing with these issues just as much as you. At any given moment in time we are dealing with ten issues just like these. Google is a pain in the ass, they don’t have any support for the small businesses that depend on their platform. These are all the bad things.

But, we don’t want just any random person to be able to easily create new profiles. It would be mass chaos with competitors pretending to be you, leaving bad reviews, and harming your reputation.

This is the reason they have all of these barriers in place. As annoying as it is they are there to protect you, your business, and the users of Google. If they didn’t have these in place it would lead to a bad experience for users and less people would use their platform.

For local businesses there is no better place to be found and win customers than Google. You must play the game in order to win.

Until next time,

Andy
