Your Google Business Profile Category is Wrong (Here's How to Fix It)
This one dropdown menu is why you're invisible on Google Maps. Here's the fix...
The Google Setting You Set Once and Forgot About
There's a hidden setting in your Google Business Profile that controls whether customers can find you.
Most business owners don't even know it exists.
It's called your "primary category," and it tells Google what type of business you are.
When you first claimed your Google listing years ago, Google asked you to pick from a dropdown menu. You probably selected something quickly and never thought about it again.
But here's the thing: Google has added dozens of new categories since then.
More specific ones. More targeted ones. Categories that match exactly what customers type when they search.
That generic category you picked in 2019? It's probably outdated.
And I see this every single day—business owners doing everything right. Collecting reviews, posting updates, responding to customers.
But they're invisible on Google Maps because their category is wrong or misleading.
The Category Problem Nobody Talks About
Here's how Google actually works:
When someone searches "dumpster rental near me," Google looks for businesses with "Dumpster Rental Service" as their category.
Not "Waste Management Service." Not "Garbage Collection Service." Not "Demolition Contractor."
The exact category: "Dumpster Rental Service."
If you don't have it, you're fighting an uphill battle.
Common mistakes I see every week:
HVAC companies selecting:
"HVAC Contractor" when most calls are for repairs
Should be: "Air Conditioning Repair Service"
Dumpster rentals selecting:
"Waste Management Service" (too broad)
Should be: "Dumpster Rental Service"
Roofers selecting:
"Construction Company" or "General Contractor"
Should be: "Roofing Contractor"
Google treats your primary category like your main identity.
It's the difference between showing up for 100 searches a month versus 300.
The Secondary Category Opportunity
Here's what most people miss:
You can add additional categories. Most businesses use 2-3.
Each category helps you show up for different searches.
But, please note that you primary category is the most important.
Example for HVAC:
Primary: Air Conditioning Repair Service (if repairs are your bread and butter)
Secondary: HVAC Contractor, etc
Example for Dumpster Rental:
Primary: Dumpster Rental Service
Secondary: Waste Management Service, etc
More categories = more ways for customers to find you.
Important Warning About Changes
HEADS UP: Changing your primary category can trigger Google to re-verify your business.
This might mean:
Temporary profile suspension
1-2 week verification process
Is it worth it? If you're in the wrong category, yes.
But time it right—don't do this during your busy season.
Client Spotlight 🏆
Jokes aside, I came to Bodhi for SEO when my biz had just gotten off the ground and after we chatted about our past work experiences and values and goals, he took me on as a client when I could barely afford it..
He believed in me when even I was in my "i don't know if this

SEO with @irentdumpsters is a continued success!
One small victory: Commercial contractor looking for 8 units at job site for 18 months. Closed it right on the phone.
Our business slows down tremendously in the winter, so securing as many long term projects is key for those

One of the most authentic recommendations I can give to anyone else in the home service space is the Stryker team for SEO.
Book a call with them if you want to rank online better than your competitors. It’s that simple.
They genuinely care about your success and they’re good
