[UPDATED] Google just rewrote the rules. Again.

If your rankings moved this month, this is why.

Google just dropped two major updates this month.

The February 2026 Core Update finished rolling out on February 14th. Rankings shifted across the board.

Then on February 5th, they released a separate Discover Core Update that changes how content shows up in people's mobile feeds.

If your rankings have been bouncing around the last few weeks — this is why.

Here's what matters for your business:

1. Review content now carries more weight

Google's local algorithm is paying closer attention to what your reviews actually say. Not just star ratings — the words.

"They replaced our water heater the same day we called" carries more weight than "Great service! 5 stars!"

If you're not coaching customers to mention the specific service you performed, start now.

2. AI Overviews are eating your clicks

Google's AI Overviews now show up above organic results for most service-related searches.

I tested this a couple weeks ago. Typed "I need a plumber in Tampa" into ChatGPT. Got 3 names. Typed the same thing into Google. The AI answered before I could scroll.

The businesses getting featured?

They all have strong Google Business Profiles, consistent reviews, and structured content on their websites. If you're missing any of those three, you're invisible to AI.

3. Engagement signals are king

Google is paying closer attention to what happens after someone finds your profile. Calls. Direction requests. Website clicks. Photo views.

All of these are ranking signals now.

A dead profile with 200 reviews but no recent activity will lose to a profile with 80 reviews that's generating real engagement every week.

What to do this week:

→ Ask your next 3 customers for a detailed review mentioning the specific service

→ Post a new photo to your GBP (literally takes 30 seconds)

→ Make sure your hours, services, and categories are 100% accurate

Google is rewarding businesses that stay active and earn real engagement.

The ones sitting still are getting pushed down.

Talk soon,

Andy
