These Three Things Are Killing Your SEO

Welcome to the Home Service Marketer newsletter.

In today’s newsletter, we are going to cover:

  • Duplicate content

  • Keyword stuffing

  • Spammy backlinks

It is approximately a 2-minute read.

Actionable Tips

1. Duplicate Content: The Silent Ranking Killer

What is it?: Publishing identical or significantly similar content across multiple pages on your website.

Why does it matter?: Search engines aim to provide unique and relevant content to users. Duplicate content confuses search engines about which page to index or rank higher, leading to lower visibility for your site.

How to Fix:

  • Identify Duplicate Content: Use tools like Copyscape or SEMrush to find and review any duplicate content on your site.

  • Create Unique Content: Rewrite any duplicated pages to reflect unique aspects of your services or local insights.

  • Use Canonical Tags: Tell search engines which version of a page you want to prioritize in search results by using the rel="canonical" tag.

2. Keyword Stuffing: More Isn't Always Better

What is it? Overloading your website's content with too many keywords in an attempt to manipulate your site's ranking.

Why does it matter? This practice makes content unnatural and unhelpful to your audience, leading search engines to demote your site in search results.

How to Fix:

  • Focus on Readability: Write naturally for your audience first, search engine second. Your content should be informative and engaging.

  • Use Keywords Strategically: Place keywords in title tags, headers, and throughout the content where they make sense contextually.

  • Leverage LSI Keywords: Include related keywords and synonyms to help search engines understand your content better without overstuffing.

What are spammy links? Spammy links are from low-quality and irrelevant websites. Please do not buy links from Fiverr or Upwork.

Why are they bad? High-quality backlinks are a vote of confidence in your site. Conversely, spammy backlinks can signal to search engines that your site might not be trustworthy.

How to Fix:

  • Conduct a Backlink Audit: Use tools like Ahrefs or Google Search Console to assess your backlink profile.

  • Disavow Bad Links: Use Google's Disavow Tool to ask Google to ignore low-quality backlinks.

  • Build Quality Backlinks: Focus on earning backlinks from reputable sites in your industry or local area through guest blogging, partnerships, and producing shareable content.
