The Trust Factor That Determines If Google Shows Your Business
Even With Perfect Relevancy, Your Business Will Fail Without These Trust Signals

Why Most Businesses Rank Poorly Even With Good Content
Yesterday, I broke down how relevancy tells Google WHAT your business does and WHERE you do it. Without clear relevancy signals, Google simply can't match you with the right searches.
But relevancy is only half the battle.
Even if Google understands exactly what services you offer and where you offer them, there's still one critical question they need answered:
"Can this business be trusted?"
Google's Two Requirements: Relevancy + Trust
Everything in SEO boils down to filling two buckets:
Relevancy - Showing Google WHAT you do and WHERE you do it
Trust - Proving to Google that you're credible and reliable
Relevancy gets you in the game. Trust determines if you win.
Why Trust Matters More Than Ever
Google's entire business model depends on showing trustworthy results. If users started getting scammy businesses in their search results, they'd switch to another search engine.
And if Google loses users, they lose advertisers – which is how they make their money.
That's why Google is obsessed with trust signals. They need proof that you're legitimate before they'll risk their reputation on yours.
The Three Trust Signals That Determine Your Rankings
When it comes to establishing trust with Google, three factors matter most:
1. Reviews (Most Important)
Reviews are the #1 trust signal for local businesses. They provide third-party verification that your business delivers what it promises.
Google looks for: Quantity (consistent new reviews), Quality (positive and detailed), Recency (reviews in the last 30 days), and Frequency (steady flow rather than batches).
If competitors have 100+ recent reviews and you have 15 from last year, Google sees them as more trustworthy – regardless of how good your service actually is.
2. Backlinks
Backlinks are digital votes of confidence from other websites. The most powerful come from local news sites, industry associations, chambers of commerce, and respected local businesses.
Just 5-10 high-quality backlinks can dramatically boost your local rankings.
3. Citations
Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number across the web. Consistent citations on Yelp, BBB, and industry directories tell Google your business is legitimate.
The key is consistency – if your information varies across platforms, it creates confusion and erodes trust.
Building Trust With Google
Remember: Trust signals compound over time. Each positive review, quality backlink, and consistent citation strengthens your foundation.
When you combine strong trust signals with proper relevancy, you create an SEO presence that competitors can't easily match.
