[NEW] Keywords In Reviews Impact Your Local SEO Rankings
Google analyzes review content to decide which services your business should rank for

How Keywords in Reviews Affect Your Rankings
I just discovered something fascinating about Google's local ranking algorithm that most SEO experts have completely missed.
While analyzing ranking patterns for a roofing client, I uncovered evidence that Google isn't just looking at star ratings or review count. It appears to be analyzing the specific keywords within reviews and using them to determine which keywords your business should rank for.
This pattern explains why some businesses with excellent overall ratings still struggle to rank for certain keyword phrases.
Google analyzes review content to decide which services your business should rank for
Real World Example:
While analyzing data for one of our roofing clients, I found something that left me speechless. Despite having an impressive 150+ reviews and a stellar 4.7-star rating, they couldn't rank for "roof repair" terms – no matter what we tried.
After deep-diving into their profile data, I discovered the smoking gun:
Of their 7 reviews with 3 stars or less, 4 of them specifically contained the phrase "roof repair."
Let that sink in for a moment.
No matter what we did with on-page content or if our backlink articles were targeted toward roof repair we could not budge the rankings.
Google wasn't just counting their review ratings and total quantity of reviews – it was analyzing the actual content of their reviews and determining which search terms they should (or shouldn't) rank for.
Why This Matters More Than Almost Any Other Ranking Factor
Google's algorithm is now sophisticated enough to:
Scan the content of your reviews
Identify specific keywords and services mentioned
Associate sentiment (positive or negative) with those specific services
Adjust your visibility for those exact search terms
Ever wonder why businesses with less reviews outrank you?
You could have a nearly perfect overall rating, but if the few negative reviews you have all mention the same service, Google will actively suppress your rankings for that service.
This is why some businesses with fewer reviews sometimes outrank those with hundreds—they've accidentally achieved better keyword sentiment distribution in their reviews.
This insight might seem small, but the implications for your business are huge. Take a moment today to look through your negative reviews and see which specific service keywords appear in them.
This simple pattern we discovered explains why some businesses with perfect overall ratings still can't rank for their most profitable services. While your competitors focus on star count alone, you now understand that the specific words in your reviews matter just as much—if not more.
At Stryker Digital, we're constantly diving deeper uncovering these hidden ranking factors that most agencies miss completely. And I give them away completely free on my YouTube channel just for you.
Until next time…
Love you,
Andy
