Valuation Arbitrage

Last week, we discussed the power and influence of Alex’s personal brand. Obviously, that is the trigger to create the opportunity for him. But I want to talk about the less obvious reason this works.

Many owners operating in the $1-$10M range have gotten there through a mix of luck and brute force. They know their revenue and profit are going up, but they don’t know their numbers at a high level.

If you don’t know your numbers, you are in for a world of hurt. How much net free cash flow did your business spit out last year? Don’t know? Then, you definitely don’t know the value of your business.

This opens two opportunities for Alex to exploit.

  1. Acquire stakes at cheaper valuations.

  2. Identify constraints in marketing efforts, quickly fix them, and improve CAC/LTV instantly, making the business more valuable.

Unlocking Instant Value

Is this a sales problem, marketing problem, organizational problem. Is the business generating leads, but not closing? Maybe it’s an offer positioning problem.

When you know the numbers of the business you can quickly identify the constraints. When I say numbers it does not only mean financial metrics, but also leads generated, show rates, deals closed, existing customer upsells. If you don’t track these numbers it will be terribly difficult to identify your current constraint.

Alex is one the clearest thinkers in business. His ability to identify the core constraint and implement a solution is what separates him and will continue to drive success for his portfolio companies.
