How to Generate Outsized Returns in Business

The biggest returns are generated by contrarian bets. Don't be afraid to go against the crowd.

How To Win Big & Win Some More

Welcome to the Home Service Marketer newsletter.

These are my own independent thoughts, and I am writing about topics that interest me. I hope you enjoy this journey of learning alongside me.

In today’s newsletter, we are going to cover:

  • What will make your business average

  • Why contrarian thinking can lead to outsized results

Actionable Tip

What you need to know: You can’t expect to do the same things as your competition and outperform.

Why? If your behavior is conventional, you’re likely to get conventional results—either good or bad.

How to be different: People usually expect the future to be like the past and underestimate the potential for change. To win big you need to identify where you see change, bet on it, and create the change.

  1. Identify conventional thought patterns

  2. Separate the herd’s thoughts and your own

  3. Identify a change in future trends and bet on it

Deep Dive:

The best opportunities are usually found among things most others won’t do. The big businesses that are doing $10M+ per year are not in their local Facebook groups networking with homeowners. At that point in their business, it doesn’t scale for them. It is much easier for them to throw an additional $5,000 at SEO or Ads. With this example, I hope you can recognize the value in “eating shit,” AKA doing things that others are not willing to do.

With this in mind, you have the ability to create opportunity. The herd is focused on one thing. Meanwhile, you’ve found low-hanging fruit with incredibly low customer acquisition costs that may not scale to $10M immediately but plant the seeds within the community and your customers for what will come as a result of doing what others are not willing to do.
